Life Under Apartheid This shows life under apartheid in pictures. Many in the western world fail to realise that white people stood up and protested against apartheid in South Africa. You will see some of these protests which took place at the University of Cape Town. There is a minority of South Africans who would like to portray the past as a time of peace, stability and abundance. That is far from reality. Free speech was not permitted, protesting was not allowed. Afrikaners were given priority treatment over other ethnic groups. With the rural afrikaners looking down at english speakers as inferior. People were forced to do military service--abuse took place in the military training camps. Some people who did not fit in society were sent to psychiatric hospitals given electric shock therapies (Truth & Reconcilliation Commission discovered gay people were forced to have shock treatment or sex changes). Black people were secretly sterilised against their knowledge. Opposition in the country was put down at any cost, religious minsters were sent letter bombs, people were murdered, Ruth First, a Jewish communist, was murdered by the police. The police murdered white and black people who opposed them. Let us not forget to mention all of the murders of black activists. Many times the country was on the brink of civil war, with State of Emergencies being imposed on the country. Hardly a land of utopia. The list is almost endless. We should never forget the past, otherwise we are destined to repeat it. The video will stay to give testimony of the past, because there is so much denial that exists even today of the past. Even God's own ministers were not safe in South Africa in a country that claimed to be Christian. I believe God looked down on South Africa with much sadness, and chose to finally put an end of the suffering that took place. Warning there are some shocking pictures. Black Apartheid in South Africa This video shows how the black activists and leaders misled their people during the anti-apartheid struggle, promising them liberation from poverty. The truth is that they merely manipulated the masses, mobilizing them to provide their leaders with an easy ticket to power and riches. The numerical supremacy of black people meant easy victory through mere "head counting" rather than the true spirit of democracy, that relies on effective opposition to provide successful government. Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) reaches much further than the affirmative action programmes in other countries. It sets quotas for black ownership of companies across all economic sectors in South Africa. Since the ANC assumed government in 1994, a loss of skills and experience on a massive scale in the public sectors (electricity supply, health care, water & sewage management etc.) combined with huge salaries and bonuses awarded to managers who were appointed based on race, rather than qualifications and experience, has resulted in extreme inefficiency and disruption. So far, the large influx of foreign investment capital since 1994 has allowed the country to absorb this squandering of resources while still maintaining economic growth. However, this video shows the growing resentment against the ANC government for their inability to translate South Africa's economic growth to job creation on a large enough scale, to combat widespread poverty effectively. The ANC has made the mistake of empowering from the top down. They demonstrate a monumental lack of ability to prioritise, spending millions on celebrations, fighter jets, change of street and city names - failing to address the issues closest to people's hearts: unemployment, violent crime and AIDS. Few feel safe in their own homes, and those who can afford it, transform their homes to virtual prisons to try and protect their families. This is not real freedom. The new, "Black Apartheid" is a far cry from the "non-racial" South Africa promised by the ANC in the lead-up to the 1994 democratic elections. The government's reckless implementation of the affirmative-action policy is forcing many white people to leave the country, creating a skills shortage crisis, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi said on Thursday. "We need to grant white South Africans a meaningful stake in the existing order ... not only does this make economic sense, it is also in line with our vision of a non-racial South Africa of the struggle days," he said. The reason a majority of white people supported the then-National Party's referendum calling for an end to apartheid rule was because they believed they would have a place in the new South Africa, said Buthelezi. "If the majority of white South Africans had envisaged in the early 1990s the way affirmative action and racial classification would come to dominate the post-apartheid labour market, few would have voted 'Yes' in Mr [FW] de Klerk's watershed referendum on constitutional reform," he said. South Africa: The new apartheid [part1] SOUTH AFRICA: THE NEW APARTHEID The series began in South Africa where a huge rise in illegal immigration from Zimbabwe and other African states is behind an increase in racism and xenophobic violence. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy journeys from the Zimbabwean border to one of Johannesburg's most dangerous quarters to investigate. Friday 13 October 2006 7.35pm Sunday 15 October 2006 4.35am (R) Reporter Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Director Robin Barnwell begin their film on the Zimbabwean border with a group of Zimbabweans as they begin a long journey to Johannesburg. The South African police stop them but let them go in exchange it is claimed, for a bribe, which the people smugglers claim is routine. The Zimbabweans say they are fleeing a collapsing state, where President Mugabe's policies have driven the economy into crisis and where earning enough to feed their families is impossible. However, the South Africans blame them for a crime wave and accuse them of causing unemployment. White farmers in the Limpopo border region tell Unreported World that the immigrants are perpetrating brutal farm murders and poaching their game. The team films several farmers taking the law into their own hands by rounding them up, tying them together and handing them over to the police. It's not just the farmers who believe these migrants are fuelling a crime wave. The team moves on to Johannesburg and films with police in one of the city's most dangerous areas. They accompany officers who routinely use plastic bullets to round up suspected illegal immigrants. Those they catch are sent to the Lindela detention centre. The team interview a group of Congolese men who accuse the guards of severely beating them. Another inmate laments that South Africans have forgotten the support that their "African brothers" gave them during the days of Apartheid and accuses black South Africans of being the "biggest racists in the world". The team then travel to the suburb of Diepsloot where the local South African business community has written an extraordinary letter to Somalian shopkeepers asking them to leave. The shopkeepers - who say they're asylum seekers rather than illegal immigrants - fear they will suffer similar violent attacks to those suffered by other immigrant communities. A group of protestors gathers, demanding that South Africa should be for South Africans only. One woman tells Unreported World that black South Africans fought long and hard to gain their freedom that these benefits are now being stolen by illegal immigrants. The team are then allowed to film on board a train returning 400 Zimbabwean illegal immigrants back to the border. Some are so desperate to remain, that they throw themselves from the moving train during the night. Almost all say they will be back in the country within a few days. Why Apartheid? "How dare he try to justify Apartheid -- a crime against humanity!" Justification is one thing; providing information that may help to bring about insight, is something else. What could motivate a group of people to deny the majority of the people in the country democratic rights, and try to cling to political power in the face of overwhelming opposition? This video examines some of the motivations behind the policy of Apartheid. The early years of Apartheid should be seen against a background of a "First world zeitgeist" (a remnant from the colonial age) of superiority over the indigenous peoples of the third world -- an idea that was losing favour rapidly in the western world throughout the 20th century, and also in SA by the 1970's. This was manifested in "petty Apartheid", or "early Apartheid" up to the late 1970's when, along with changing times internationally, these petty apartheid discriminatory laws were being repealed one after the other. The second layer of background arises from a history of British repression, which only increased unity among Afrikaners, fuelling a determination to achieve freedom and independence. This contributed to their reluctance to part with these, once finally attained. Power sharing with the vastly superior numbers of black Africans in the same geographical area seemed to mean certain loss of their freedom. This gave rise to the homeland system and separate development. The rapid growth of the black population meant that separate development was inevitably unequal. The following factors also played an important role: 1) A history of Afrikaner struggle against an imperial superpower that caused the death of 26, 370 women and children, wiping out almost half their child population. After the Anglo-Boer War, the British continued a policy of repression of Afrikaans language and culture. 2) This led to the rise of a strong national pride amongst Afrikaners, with aspirations of freedom and independence. 3) The Cold War and increasing Soviet influence in Sub-Saharan Africa, with strong communist tendencies displayed by black political movements (ANC-SACP-COSATU Alliance) and 4) the disappointing and alarming track record of other African countries under black majority rule, as the "wind of change" swept across Africa, provided further impetus for Afrikaners to resist democracy in SA. Over three centuries the Afrikaner had become as much part of Africa as any black African tribe. Links with Europe were tenuous, the Afrikaner was totally committed to South Africa, and had no other country in the world they could call home. Under the circumstances described above, how could they be expected not to do everything in their power to preserve their heritage, and try to secure a future for their children? However, changes in the world and the rapidly growing urban black population (matched by their political aspirations) were overtaking them. How could it be expected of them to just suddenly hand over all power to the black people? They saw themselves as waging a legitimate war of self-preservation in a hostile continent, under threat of declining prosperity as seen in the rest of Africa on the one hand, and communist rule on the other. How could power sharing be a realistic option when a simple democracy meant merely counting the numbers: 35 million vs. 3.5 million? Apartheid laws were being repealed one after the other since the late 1970's, but the black activist movements were not interested in these reforms, and would not be satisfied until all power resided in their hands.
